Hosted by Sarafan ChEM-H and organized collaboratively by Stanford, UCSF, and Berkeley, the second biannual 2024 Bay Area Chemical Biology Symposium, held on October 21-22, 2024, brought together more than 450 attendees. The event’s faculty planning committee–Matt Bogyo (Stanford), Jim Wells (UCSF), and Matt Francis (Berkeley)–invited nearly 40 chemical biologists to give talks on their latest research in areas like new chemical sensors; the molecular mechanisms of cancer, neurodegeneration, and other diseases; the chemistry of smell; targeted degradation; designer proteins; and more.
The event also included speed talks and poster presentations by students and postdocs, and networking opportunities. These allowed attendees to spark connections with scientific leaders and peers, and deepen their understanding of the advancements in the chemical biology field and its role in driving medical innovations.
The photos below give a glimpse of the energy and enthusiasm at the event, capturing the variety of both expertise and individuals within the chemical biology community.

The two-day symposium featured exceptional scientific talks by leading chemical biologists from Stanford, UCSF, and Berkeley. Pictured below, from left to right, are several of them with an engaged audience.
The event over two days offered ample opportunities for connection. Captured below are some moments from the networking lunch, Q&A sessions with faculty speakers, poster presentations, and the organizing committee.
